What is a marketing funnel?
A marketing funnel is a visual representation of the customer journey, this includes the various touch points a consumer will have with your brand. Not all consumer journeys are the same, but you can map out a few hypothetical journeys based on how you’ve built your brand, which marketing platforms you are present on, if you run email campaigns, etc..
First, I want you to think through each touch point a consumer would have with your brand from the start, when they initially become aware you exist, to the final purchase, and the period after they buy. When we think about a marketing funnel, there are typically five stages, and this remains generally consistent across various industries.
View the a marketing funnel framework:
Awareness - This is the very beginning, when potential customers initially become aware of your brand and products/services.
Inspiration - It is here your target consumer begins to feel inspired by your brand. This is when your target customer begins to see how your product or service will solve their problem, aka the all-mighty transformation. This is a great time to promote your free lead magnet, a valuable tool or resource that helps your target audience resolve a key pain point with quick value.
Education - This is when your target consumer is learning more about your product or service. It’s at this point they are comparing the options of what you offer and are nearing the purchase phase. This is where you really build your authority. This can be done through a variety of channels, including blog posts, organic posts and reels on social media, etc..
Purchase - The golden purchase phase - this is when the consumer decides to buy from you! Either by booking your services or purchasing a product. This is the conversion we're all striving for!
Post-Purchase - The marketing funnel doesn’t stop at purchase, the post-purchase phase is extremely important for your brand as this is where you support your consumer after they’ve bought from you. This will ensure your customer has a positive experience with you to help drive positive reviews, a potential re-purchase down the road, and referral business.
Why do you need clarity around your marketing funnel(s) in your business?
A marketing funnel is essential for brands because it helps you gain clarity on how you will reach consumers for each phase of the funnel. This allows you to gain:
Increased Conversion Rates - By using your marketing funnel, you will have clarity on at what point in the funnel you are communicating to your consumer, allowing you to communicate the right message at the right time. This in turn, increases the likelihood of converting prospective customers into converting or paying customers.
More Targeted Marketing - Your marketing funnel will enable you to target your audience more effectively. This means you can tailor your messaging and creative to specific audience sets based on what phase of the journey they are in. Have you ever received ads telling you to 'Buy Now!' when you had just discovered a new brand? Coming on a bit strong and much too soon, am I right? More targeted marketing means you are putting the right message in front of the right prospective consumers, at the right phase of their consumer journey, leading to higher engagement and conversion rates.
Better Customer Engagement - When you properly utilize a marketing funnel, you will offer your consumers a more personalized experience tailored to where they are in the funnel, which will help improve your customer engagement and loyalty in the long run.
